Patek Philippe Watch Company – Brief History
Antoine Patek stated making pocket watches in 1839 in Geneva with a fellow Polish migrant, Franciszek Czapek. In 1844 the two parted and Patek joined French watchmaker, Adrien Philippe. In 1851 Antoni Patek and Adrien Philippe co-founded Patek Philippe. The company unveiled the first wristwatch in 1868 for the Countess Koscowicz of Hungary and was a pioneer in perpetual calendar, split-second hand, chronograph and minute repeater watches. Over the years Patek Philippe has sold its watches to monarchs including Queen Victoria of England and Hussein Kamal of Egypt, who have collected Patek Philippe watches and given then away as distinguished gifts.
In 1932 Patek Philippe was purchased by the brothers Jean and Charles Stern and continues to be run by the Stern family today. The company owns over 70 patents today and is the only watch maker that crafts all of its mechanical movements according to the specification of the Geneva Seal.
Patek Philippe has made two of the world's most expensive watches ever sold: an ultra-complicated 24-function pocket watch which sold for $11 million in 1999 and a Sky Moon Tourbillion Platinum watch which sold for $1.5 million in 2003. One of the reasons that the company's watches have sold at record-high prices among the world's luxury watches is that the company itself is involved in buying in auctions in order to add to its collection in the Patek Philippe Museum in Geneva (Rue des Vieux-Grenadiers 7 CH-1205 Geneva Telephone +41 (0)22 807 09 10), Switzerland. The museum is open today and is a great resource for learning about the history of luxury watch making in Switzerland.
